Dolly Parton Says No To Super Bowl Halftime Show

However, Parton also refused Elvis Presley’s request to record her song I Will Always Love You. And at first, the country music songstress even rejected an invitation to join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, Dolly explained her reasons.

And Parton shared that she received the opportunity to perform at the NFL annual Super Bowl halftime show “many times.” But the modest singer confessed, “I just didn’t think I was big enough to do it — to do that big of a production. When you think about those shows, those are big, big productions. I’ve never done anything with that big of a production. I don’t know if I could have. I think at the time that’s what I was thinking.”

Dolly Parton Becomes Rock Star

And amid promoting her new album Rock Star, Dolly also shared that she devoted many years to the album. To support the 30 songs on the album, Parton called a list of other legends, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, and Sting.

Others contributing to Dolly’s album include Joan Jett, Kid Rock, Emmylou Harris, Ringo Starr, Steven Tyler, and Melissa Etheridge. And the country singer also features contemporary artists such as Chris Stapleton, Miley Cyrus, Lizzo, Pink and Brandi Carlile. But Parton waited to release the project until after her induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

And at first, Dolly refused the opportunity to receive the honor. “They’re going to put me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and somebody like Meat Loaf or some of these other great artists never even made it? I didn’t want to take away from somebody that has spent their life in that world like I had spent mine in country [music],” explained the humble singer.

However, then Parton learned that a wide range of artists have accepted the offer. For instance, other recent additions to the Rock Hall include Willie Nelson, Missy Elliott and George Michael. “They told me all the ways that people’s music has influenced other people around the world … and told me about other people that were in it besides rock.”

And so Dolly finally accepted it. “But I still didn’t feel great about it. I still thought I needed to earn it,” she explained. “That’s why I thought, ‘Well, timing is perfect’ [about her new album].”
