Ed Sheeran Recalls How The Arrival Of His Children Brought The End Of Him Drinking Hard Liquor

The “Shape of You” singer recently opened up to “Rolling Stone” in an interview, and shared some deeply personal things that went on in his life and how he dealt with it, especially his drinking days.

Speaking with the outlet, the “Thinking Out Loud” singer revealed that he was a drinker who kept on drinking even till the time his wife conceived their first child. It was the words of his wife that caused him to double-check and retrace his steps.

“Two months before [2-year-old daughter] Lyra was born, Cherry said, ‘If my waters break, do you really want someone else to drive me to the hospital?’ Because I was just drinking a lot.”

“And that’s when it clicked. I was like, ‘No, actually, I really don’t.’ And I don’t ever want to be pissed holding my kid. Ever, ever. Having a couple of beers is one thing. But having a bottle of vodka is another thing.”

He went on to add, “It’s just a realization of, ‘I’m getting into my thirties. Grow up! You’ve partied, you’ve had this experience. Be happy with that and just be done,’ I love red wine, and I love beer. I don’t know any old rockers that aren’t alcoholics or sober, and I didn’t want to be either.”

Ed Sheeran — Sheeran Didn’t Just Drink, He Also Did Drugs

The “Perfect” singer admitted to the outlet that had tried his hands on “few” substances over the years. He recalled the first time he took drugs was while attending a party with his friends and thought he could as well take drugs since every one of his friends takes drugs.

“I remember just being at a festival and being like, ‘Well, if all of my friends do it, it can’t be that bad.’ And then sort of dabbling. And then it just turns into a habit that you do once a week and then once a day and then, like, twice a day and then, like, without booze, It just became bad vibes.”

The 32-year-old said he put an end to drugs after losing his best friend Jamal Edwards to cocaine-induced cardiac arrhythmia. Edwards’ death devastated Sheeran so much that he vowed never to touch drugs again.

“I would never, ever, ever touch anything again, because that’s how Jamal died, and that’s just disrespectful to his memory to even, like, go near,” said the dad of two.

Edwards died at age 31, and Sheeran got to find out about his demise after texting Edwards to feature in his music video. He said that Edwards passed “twelve hours later.” To crown it all, the following month, Sheeran lost another friend Shane Warne, 30, an Australian cricket player.
