Will Smith’s I Am Legend Sequel Will Take Place Many Years After First Movie

It’s been years since Will Smith’s “I Am Legend” came out, and since then fans have been begging for a sequel. Every once in a while, news of a sequel emerges, but nothing has been serious until now.

And yeah, the DVD version of “I Am Legend,” where Smith’s character survives is the one the producers have decided to go with.

Prior to this news, Will Smith has initially denied having any desire to return for a sequel of his successful 2007 post-apocalyptic movie, where he played one of the only survivors in a world filled with mutants.

In the movie, Smith’s character Dr. Robert Neville seeks to find a cure for this disease that has swept the entire world. In the end, he succumbs to the condition when the mutants overpower him.

However, for hardcore fans of the movie – you know, the ones that bought the DVD version – it’s not exactly a stretch of the imagination to hear that Smith will be reprising his role. Why? Because the DVD version happens to have an alternative ending where his character lives.

Despite being against making a sequel to the hit movie, Smith finally agreed to give the franchise one more go when Michael B. Jordan contacted him with an idea for the sequel.

He then first opened up about the possibility of a sequel in his 2022 interview with Entertainment Tonight, “The idea came up. I can’t talk about it yet. But it’s a really, really cool concept, and he was a part of creating the idea. So it was one of those ones I was gonna leave alone, and then I heard the idea. I was like, ‘That might work. I think we can do that.’”

Will Smith Confirms Completion Of “I Am Legend 2” Script

In another interview, Smith, 55, revealed that “I Am Legend 2” already has a working script.

“The script just came in… I’m probably giving away too much information,” he said. “You have to be a real ‘I Am Legend’ buff, but in the first one, in the theatrical version, my character died. But for the DVD, there was an alternate version of the ending of the movie where my character lived.”

Warner Bros. has been interested in making the sequel for a long time, and this March, they confirmed that it has entered production.

Producer and writer Akiva Goldsman further teased more details of the sequel.

“This will start a few decades later than the first,” he said. “I’m obsessed with ‘The Last of Us,’ where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-30-year lapse. You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York.”

Smith and Jordan are joining as producers.
