“Coronation Street” announced the huge storyline is inspired by the real tragic story of Sophie Lancaster, who was beaten to death for being goth.

On August 11, 2007, Sophie 20, together with her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, was beaten by the thugs in the park in Bacup, Lancs. The gang beat her boyfriend first until he was unconscious to set their energy on Sophie. They kicked and stamped on her so savagely to the point that she was unrecognizable and the emergency workers weren’t unable to identify who was male and female. Sophie was placed in a coma and put on life support, but her body did not survive weeks later. On the good side, although Robert suffered internal bleeding, he was lucky to survive, however, with his memory erased.

“Coronation Street” has been working with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, and Sophie’s mother Sylvia is participating with the soap writers in developing the plot.
