British royal family news shows that during his lifetime Queen Elizabeth’s husband Prince Philip was never referred to as King despite being married for 73 years to the UK’s longest reigning monarch.
Titles are very important to the lifeblood of the monarchy and yet when the queen’s son succeeds her, his wife will not be called Queen. Prince Charles will follow his mother as King but his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, is not expected to be known as Queen. What gives with these unlikely instances for Philip and Camilla?

Royal Family News – The Royals Play The Name Game
The Queen and her husband Prince Philip were married for more than seven decades. At the time of his death in April he was 99 and due to turn 100 in June. Was he not known as King because his wife was still a princess when they married in 1947?
Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952, and at that time he became her consort. Likewise, when Charles takes the reigns Camilla is expected to become his consort.
Royal Family News – Why Was Prince Philip Not Called King?
Prince Philip was given the title His Royal Highness (HRH) The Duke of Edinburgh by Elizabeth’s father, King George VI, before he married Elizabeth. When Elizabeth became Queen his royal title didn’t change.
But in 1957, the Queen issued a Letters Patent which made Philip a Prince of the United Kingdom.
A Palace statement announced at the time: “The Queen has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm bearing date 22nd February, 1957, to give and grant unto His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, K.G., K.T., G.B.E., the style and titular dignity of a Prince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Whitehall.”

Prince Philip Was Not King
There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Philip was the Queen’s treasured companion and life partner. On the occasion of their 50th anniversary she called him her, “strength and stay.” But he was known as Prince Philip until his death.
Why was he never entitled to be known as King? It is because Philip was not directly in line to the British throne in his own right.
Thus, as a man who married the Queen he could not be called King Consort. Conversely, a woman who marries the King can be called Queen Consort. This is expected to be the case for Kate Middleton and Prince William. Why will Camilla not be called Queen Consort?
It was announced when Charles and Camilla married in 2005 that Camilla will be known as Princess Consort when Charles is King.

I’m surprised Camilla won’t be called Royal Mistress Consort. I mean that us how she got the title and it will be sad to see her in any public position with Charles as king. What really surprises me is the Queen allowing her to have any position within the Royal family.
I will long for the days of King William And Queen Consort Catherine!
Oh please isn't it time to let go of hate for a woman you will probably never meet? Camilla has NOT put a food wrong since she married Charles and has worked her butt off for the royal family. And NO there will not be a King William as long as Charles is alive, that is how the monarchy works, one heir follows the other. HM has taken her time to see how Camilla worked out and Camilla has done great so whatever HM gives her is her due for all that work. There are MUCH more pressing issues than Camilla to deal with in the royal family…….Andrew and the idiots in CA for one.
Camilla doesnt deserve even the title she will get when Charles becomes king. How will kate become queen consort and camilla wont. We all know camilla is a homewrecker, maybe that is why she wont get a fancy title.
