Kung Fu Reboot in the Works at The CW

Kung Fu

The CW is known for its dark teen dramas and superhero series, but the network is also taking a good look at the Kung Fu. This reboot is based on the 1970s television series that starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who traveled throughout the American Old West on the search for his half-brother. The Kung Fu reboot was first reported by Deadline.

However, this new series will have a female lead. The hourlong drama will include a team of writers from the Blindspot series. Some of those writers include Christina M. Kim, Martin Gero, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter. The series, written by Kim, will be inspired by the 70s drama of the same name. But it’ll be reimagined through the eyes of a young Chinese-American woman who drops out of college to go on a journey in a monastery in China that changes her life forever.

But once she returns to her hometown that’s ruined by crime and corruption, she’ll use her martial arts skills and Shaolin values to protect her community. She’ll fight for her life to bring criminals to justice as she looks for the person responsible for her Shaolin mentor’s murder. It also turns out that the same person is looking for her. So, it sounds similar to Arrow, but without the superheroes.

It’ll also focus on Chinese-American representation, which will be refreshing for the network. The producers are currently looking for an Asian-American actress to portray the character. An Asian-American actor was the lead in the original series. Two other versions of this project with different writers were in development with Fox in previous years, but nothing came out of them. There’s a good chance that this project will be greenlighted by The CW.

Berlanti, Schechter, and the rest of the writers already have a positive working relationship with The CW. For now, there isn’t any other news on the Kung Fu reboot.
