‘Reno 911!’ Reboot? Where the Comedy Plans to Make Its Big Return

Reno 911!

Reno 911! is making a comeback. The comedy series is set to return after a decade. However, this show will not be on Comedy Central. Instead, it will be on the new Quibi streaming service. So, it’s not going to come back in the original fans that fans are familiar with. Reno 911! was a playful take on the Cops reality show. It aired on Comedy Central from 2003 to 2009. The series was focused on the staff in the fictional Reno Sheriff’s Department.

What made Reno 911! unique from other comedy series is that only the plot outline of each episode was scripted. The banter and the dialogue between the characters was improvised. This gave the mockumentary some added realism. Some would argue that Reno 911! was more ahead of its time than other popular comedies, such as The Office and 30 Rock. Another critical element of the show was that the characters complained about how only their weakest moments were being highlighted. Their good work was often overlooked.

It also poked fun at some of the television programs that Reno 911! was inspired by and meant to spoof. It was a commentary on how reality television only shows one side of the story. It’s the kind of commentary that’s still true and relevant to this day long after the comedy series has ended. According to Variety, Reno 911! is finding new life on the upcoming streaming platform Quibi. But it’s not a reboot or revival of the series. It’s being reported as a new season of the show which had its original home on Comedy Central.

Kerri Kenney-Silver, Robert Ben Garant, and Thomas Lennon are expected to make their return to the series. The trio will also be writing for the comedy. However, it’s not clear whether the original cast will return. Danny DeVito, Michael Shamberg, and Stacey Sher, who served as executive producers on the original series, will be returning for the Quibi installment. It was previously rumored that Netflix was interested in a new season of Reno 911! back in 2011, but those plans fell through.

The new season will roll out on Quibi in a different way. The streaming platform wants to offer jokes in small bites. However, with the increasing popularity of law enforcement shows such as Live PD, there is still plenty of material to work with. What are your thoughts on Reno 911! making a return?
