The Good Doctor Earns Season 5 Renewal

ABC proved it recognizes the popularity of The Good Doctor by choosing the medical drama as the first scripted show to renew for the upcoming season.

Much of the credit for the show’s success goes to actor Freddie Highmore. As the star, Highmore has the challenging task of portraying Dr. Shaun Murphy. That role involves:

portraying a gifted surgeon showing the many different dimensions of a young man with autism playing a character who faces challenges in assimilating with his colleagues at the hospital and with his growing group of friends in his personal life.

ABC reported that The Good Doctor has fulfilled their hopes for the unusual show. The medical drama currently holds the number one spot on Monday nights at 10 pm. The total number of viewers has soared to 7.1 million.

What Could Season 5 Hold For The Good Doctor?

Looking at what has happened in season 4, it’s clear that the Good Doctor himself, Dr. Shaun Murphy, will not have a smooth ride in season 5.

First, there’s life at the hospital. Now that Shaun is going to be a father, it’s evident that he is concerned about Lea and the baby.

That concern extends to Dr. Murphy’s professional life. When Shaun faces medical cases involving children, he now must set aside his emotions as a parent and focus on his medical knowledge. We are predicting many such scenes in season 5 of The Good Doctor.

And then we have Shaun’s personal relationships. Pregnancy and motherhood mean Dr. Murphy will have to combine his medical knowledge with his love for Lea and the unborn child.

The executive producer of The Good Doctor, David Shore, has talked about the future for Dr. Shaun Murphy.

“We want to deal with … a mature relationship, and the challenges of that,” explained The Good Doctor EP and showrunner. “The mistakes that we all make in relationships, and the wisdom that Shaun can bring, along with the misunderstandings, and the confusion he takes.”
