It’s been revealed that Osvaldo Benavides has been promoted as a series regular in the upcoming season. He’ll be returning as Dr. Mateo Rendon Osma, who may also be a potential love interest of Dr. Audrey Lim (Christina Chang).

Viewers know that Antonia Thomas exited the show as Dr. Claire Brown when her character decided to leave St Bonaventure to work at a clinic in Guatemala. Her character’s exit followed the departure of another series regular, Nicholas Gonzales, who played Dr. Neil Melendez during the show’s season premiere.

The Good Doctor Spoilers – Thomas’ Decision To Leave The Show

In a recent interview, the actress said that leaving the show was a difficult decision for her given that the last four years she spent there were incredible. She may have already left the show but the actress said she’s open for a possible return.

“Really for me, if there was more time in the year to be able to shoot the show and to be able to go off and do some of the other things that I’m wanting to explore now, I’d do both,” she revealed.

St. Bonaventure Welcomes A New Team Member

Claire may be gone from St. Bonaventure but the team will be welcoming a new member, Mateo, who’s a local trauma surgeon. The character was introduced during the show’s two-part season 4 finale. Benavides’ character seems to click with Chang’s character Audrey. The pair grew closer together after they were kidnapped. They spent the night together and the upcoming season may include their romance storyline.

Benavides is one of the three stars who have been promoted to series regulars. Noah Galvin who plays Dr. Asher Wolke and Bria Samone Henderson as Dr. Jordan Allen also joined the main cast for the show’s upcoming fifth season, which is set to air later this year. They were introduced in season 4 together with Summer Brown and Brian Marc who played Olivia Jackson and Enrique Guerin, respectively.

Playing Mateo on “The Good Doctor” will be Benavides’ first major English-language role. His other acting credits include Netflix’s “Monarca” and “La suerte de Loli,” which are still on air on Telemundo.
