The Real Reason FOX Canceled Beverly Hills 90210 Reboot

Viewers may recall that BH90210, Fox’s reboot of Beverly Hills 90210, was canceled back in November. A few months later, the network’s Chief of Entertainment Michael Thorn broke his silence and explained why the show didn’t get another season.

Although Thorn described the reboot as “ballsy,” he revealed that the network expected it to have a short lifespan.

A “Ballsy” Move

“I thought it was really brave for the actors. It was really ballsy,” Thorn said said.

“To pull something off like that is such a high degree of difficulty and I think they did a terrific job but even six [episodes] was really challenging,” he added.

“The idea was to do it as a big event and it did really well for us, it did well in the ratings and was very satisfying for the fans and then let it be what it was, not turning it into something it wasn’t intended to be, which is a long running concept that was not sustainable,” he continued.

A Different Take – Beverly Hills 90210 Reboot

The reboot had an interesting premise and the concept for the first season was devised by Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth. It centered on the lives of the actors from the original series as they play a heightened version of themselves as they try to get a reboot of the series. The show had six episodes and the final one, ironically, showed that the group’s own 90210 reboot was picked up by the network.

Although Thorn praised the idea, he revealed that the network wanted to “let it be.”

“Tori and Jenny put this idea together and they were obviously great in front of the camera but I was impressed with what they did. To pull that kind of an idea is hard,” he said.

The BH90210 Cast

BH90210 featured most of the original cast except for Luke Perry. It was produced by CBS TV Studios and Fox Entertainment. It was executive produced by Garth, Spelling, Jason Priestley, Shannen Doherty, Ian Ziering, Gabrielle Carteris and Brian Austin Green. The other co-showrunners were Chris Alberghini, Mike Chessler, and Paul Sciarrotta.

Garth said in an exclusive interview with HollywoodLife that the cast is looking for other options, including finding a different home for the show. And if that happens, there’s a possibility that it’ll be a straight reboot of the original show.
