Royal Family News: Sarah Ferguson Now Recovering At Home After Mastectomy

British royal family news reveals that last week a spokesman for Sarah Ferguson announced she was resting at home following a successful cancer operation at King Edward VII’s Hospital in London, with no further details regarding her situation given.

Today The Mail on Sunday reported that the duchess spent four days in intensive care following a successful single mastectomy.

Sarah underwent an eight-hour operation but thankfully is said to be in “good spirits” with a friend sharing that “Sarah was even joking before the operation that she was looking forward to being slimmer as a result of the fat being taken from her stomach for the breast reconstruction and that she would start a healthy kick, eating right and exercising.”

A source added that after she recovers fully, Sarah intends to be an advocate to raise awareness of the importance of early cancer detection.

Sarah is a patron of the charity Teenage Cancer Trust and her daughters Beatrice and Eugenie have helped their mother to support the charity.

A source told the outlet that Sarah’s operation “was very long – getting on for eight hours – and it was more involved than people think. Today, the message she wants to get out is that she is very grateful to those who saved her and she feels very lucky to be alive.”

Sarah is now recovering at her home, Royal Lodge, which she shares with her ex-husband Prince Andrew. It’s been reported that Princess Eugenie has practically moved in to help her mother and that Princess Beatrice is “constantly on the phone” with Sarah.

A Buckingham Palace representative stated that King Charles has sent his former sister-in-law his wishes for a speedy recovery.

Sarah’s cancer odyssey reportedly began less than two months ago “when a routine test first detected something was seriously wrong before the Coronation.”

Royal Family News: Sarah Ferguson’s Mastectomy

According to the outlet, in early May Sarah’s mammogram revealed a shadow and afterward “a biopsy was taken from the shadowy area of tissue” with the test results confirming that she had breast cancer.

Because of the size of the cancerous area Sarah was advised to have a single mastectomy. Christina Choy was the surgeon who carried out the mastectomy and plastic surgeon Stuart James performed a breast reconstruction with the ‘DIEP flap’ technique, described as a special procedure that “is so complex that only highly skilled surgeons are allowed to attempt it.

The procedure involves taking fat from the abdomen to form a new breast and it can take more than six hours to perform because it involves “microvascular surgery which involves cutting and then re-joining delicate 2mm blood vessels.”
